Tomorrow, the Senate Judiciary Committee will vote on President Barack Obama’s first Supreme Court nominee, Sonia Sotomayor. She is virtually certain to be confirmed by a vote of the full Senate by the end of next week, becoming the first Latina justice.

The most recent Republican Senator to announce his decision to vote against Sotomayor is Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the Ranking Member on the committee. “I don’t believe that Judge Sotomayor has the deep-rooted convictions necessary to resist the siren call of judicial activism,” Sessions wrote in an opinion piece published in USA Today.

Most conservative Republicans are lining up against Sotomayor, but a handful of GOP senators are siding with majority Democrats to back her. Sessions joins Orrin Hatch of Utah, Jon Kyl of Arizona, and John Cornyn of Texas all who have said recently that they will oppose her.
